The Huddersfield Branch of the British Association for German Shepherd Dogs (BAGSD) has been conducting training of German Shepherd Dogs for over 60 years.
The national association of BAGSD is based in Birmingham and there are over 40 branches in the UK, of which Huddersfield is one of the largest. Our present training venue in Huddersfield is at Bradley Mills Club - Barr street, just off Leeds Road.
We have an enthusiastic committee who are elected yearly. Our qualified Instructors all strive to do their very best for all of our members and their dogs.
Our Instructors aim is to train your dog. but to help you acquire the necessary skills to train your own dog. At first you will find it hard work, but perseverance and the rewards will be worthwhile. Remember, although your German Shepherd may be your companion and pet, it is going to grow up to be a big strong animal and the sooner it understands what you want him or her to do, the easier it will be for you, your dog and your whole family.
Depending on circumstances we may run agility classes during the summer months and take part in displays and competitions.
Progress days are held twice a year with tests to suit which ever level you have reached with your dog. Trophies and Diplomas are awarded to winning qualifiers from each class. Awards are presented in a social get together in the afternoon after progress day.
The club is also involved in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme and members are encouraged to take the various levels.
No experience is necessary to train at the club and junior membership is available for under 18 years who need to attend with an adult
Training takes place on the cricket field. All classes may train at different times with various instructors. Dogs with problems or requiring extra input are taken on a one to one basis if instructors are available. We encourage members to attend regularly so they can progress with their dogs and also enjoy socialising and getting to know other dogs and handlers. The club house is available with toilets, tea/coffee and refreshments at the break. there is currently no disabled access to the club house.
Membership
Classes are £5.00 per dog per week for any number of the classes on offer that you wish to attend.
Annual National Membership of BAGSD Ltd for 2024 is: Standard Membership £18.00. This provides you and your dog with insurance while training with the club.
Huddersfield Branch Members are also required to pay a £5.00 social membership to the Bradley Mills Club and this entitles to full use of the facilities at all time.
All in all we think it provides good value and we work hard throughout the year to raise funds to provide all the necessary equipment. awards and sundry items required to run the club and still keep our training fees at an affordable level.
We are active in raising funds for Dog charities and make annual donations.

Dave Sutcliffe
President, Vice-Chairperson
Dave joined the club in 2004 with Dawn and their first GSD. He has worked his dog Thor, now retired, up to Novice level at the club and attends weekly to help out in all aspects of organisation at the club. He can often be found enjoying talking to members and looking after pups and offering advice about the club to new members as well as maintaining our agility shed and equipment. Dave works as a Factory Supervisor so is inside all week therefore he enjoys weekends when he can get out walking with his 3 dogs Thor, Zanna and Morse in the country. Away from dogs Dave enjoys camping and cars and vans!
Dawn Sutcliffe
Secretary and Instructor. Director of Training, Northern Area
Dawn is married to Dave and they have two children. Over the years they have owned many dogs ranging from an Afghan hound to Yorkshire terriers but bought their first GSD Gypsy in 2004 and joined Huddersfield Branch shortly afterwards. Dawn enjoys her role as secretary as well as Instructing at all levels. She is a qualified KCGCDS examiner at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and also takes part in competitive obedience around the country having qualified her second GSD Zeus out of Beginner. She is now working with her pup Morse to continue forward in competition and enjoys spending a lot of time training her dogs. Away from the club Dawn is a Despatch manager for a local sports company and enjoys walking with the dogs and her family.
Lynne Blair
Chairperson, Treasurer, Instructor and Show Secretary
Lynne joined the Huddersfield branch in 1999 after her move south from Scotland. She has had 5 GSDs over the years and has enjoyed various facets of training including Obedience, Breed showing, field trials and Agility. Her current dog Tiber is rarely at the club due to her other commitments. Lynne has been instructing since 2008 and a Committee member since 2006. She has a special interest in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme and is an Examiner for both Bronze, Silver and Gold levels as well as instructing at all levels. Away from dogs Lynne enjoys photography, wildlife and nature and breeds and shows hamsters under the Custard Hamstery prefix. She is a qualified Syrian Hamster judge. Lynne believes that every dog deserves to be trained to be a good member of society so that the can enjoy the best life possible.
Mandie Orr

Mandie joined BAGSD in 2009 and has always had dogs in her life and GSDs have been the main breed she has lived with and loved. Having had 7 GSD's through her life she currently has a teenager Chakotay and a toddler Dax, who are filling her time up. Mandie started to train as an instructor in 2015 and is now fully qualified as an instructor. Teaching all levels including KC Bronze/Silver classes as well as being a KC Bronze examiner. She enjoys using her technological skills to manage the website. Outside of dogs Mandie enjoys shopping, growing veg, and walking with her dogs.
